Downtown Luxembourg - a Virtual Tour

Luxembourg is not a very big town - but you can easily get fooled when you decide to explore. The more than 100 different banks, whose offices are well represented along the Avenue Royal, tend to be modern eyesores, however they are a main source of income for the Luxembourgish economy, so they are tolerated.

[Place d'Armes - the meeting spot]

The old center of Luxembourg Ville is the Place d'Armes. Its trademarks are the music stand for the cultural performances of various visiting orchestras and groups of a most varying kind. The music stand is also the indicator that Luxembourg Ville is basically a small provincial town, which has grown but not really lost its soul. The other hallmark is the number of outdoor tables and chairs - Place d'Armes is the place to sit and watch, and be watched by the other passers-by.

[The Town Hall]

If you walk through the passage next to the bookstore, you get to the Town Hall Square, and the Town Hall. If you look carefully you can spot the twin towers of the national cathedral in its background - the Luxembourgish Notre Dame.

[The palace of the Grand Duke]

Walk along the length of the Town Hall Square and cross a street, and you're at the palace of the Grand Duke Jean, and his family.

[The 'Pastetchen' with its flagpole]

Now we're taking a small stroll down the Rue Notre Dame out onto the Boulevard Roosevelt and onto the bridge Pont Adolphe. From here you have an excellent view of the platform some way up the old fortifications of the town, called the "Pastetchen" or small sandwich. To the right of the Pastetchen you can spot the Place de la Constitution, which is an excellent place to view the valley of the stream that flow through Luxembourg Ville, called the Pétrusse.

[Notre Dame - the national cathedral]

Still from our vantage point we look further to the right of the Place de la Constitution and again we spot the national cathedral - the Notre Dame in all its glory and splendor.
