The Mont-Saint-Nicolas is a large water reservoir which is basically a large water battery. When the hydroelectrical plant below is producing excess power, the surplus power is used to pump water up into the Mont-Saint-Nocolas reservoir. And when the hydroelectric plant can't produce enough to meet demand, the water from Mont-Saint-Nicolas is led down to and through turbines at the plant and converted back into electrical power.

The round tower on the left is the pumping tower, through which all water is pumped into and drained from the reservoir.

The white area between the water line and almost up to the top of the reservoir gives you an idea of the changes in water height that occur through the continued use.

This is part of the hydroelectrical plant below Mont-Saint-Nicolas, but only a very small part. Most of the plant is inside the mountain, and only accessible through tunnels.

There are side dams that control the flow of water to the main dam by adding multiple steps. The lakes are used extensively for recreational activities mosr of the year, not only by Luxembourgers, but also from neighboring Belgium and Germany.
