Wine Production in Luxembourg

When visiting Luxembourg, make sure you try the local white wine. Luxembourg shares the Moselle river with Germany along Luxembourg's Eastern frontier, and produce substantial quanta of generally excellent wine.

The village you see on the picture is called Wellenstein, and just beyond the hill behind the village is the Moselle river - and the German wine area.

[Wine ranks]

Luxembourg has an old and distinguished wine tradition, which can be experienced when traveling along the road on the Luxembourgish side of the Moselle. Cave upon cave rank the road, and offer tastes of their products to passers-by.

Old wooden casks contain the produce of previous years, until it has matured enough to give pleasure when consumed. And the wine is generally so strong in taste that caution in the choice of accompanying courses should be taken.

The wine press depicted here is located in an old monastery on the German part of the river, and is of a kind that is now being taken out of production, giving way to new centrifugal presses.
